Alocasia ‘Polly Variegata’
Everyone knows a Polly.
Sharp edges. Deep green. White veins that look like they’ve been drawn on with intent. It’s one of those plants that built the whole “indoor jungle” aesthetic before most people even realised what they were doing.
Then this turns up…
Same structure. Same attitude.
But the green starts breaking.
Cream. Yellow. Sometimes almost glowing patches running through those dark leaves like something’s interrupted the signal halfway through.
And suddenly… it’s not a Polly anymore.
It’s something else entirely.
Why this one hits
There’s a reason Polly is everywhere.
It’s dramatic without being huge.
Structured without being boring.
It already looks like a statement piece.
Now take that… and make every leaf unpredictable.
Some come out lightly marbled.
Some go heavy.
Some look like they’ve been split between two different plants.
It keeps you watching it.
That’s the difference.
What’s really going on
This is a variegated form of Alocasia x amazonica ‘Polly’.
So underneath all the pattern and colour… it’s still the same plant.
But like all variegation…
Less chlorophyll = less energy.
Which means:
It needs better light
It needs more consistency
And it will tell you quickly if something’s off
That’s the trade.
You get the beauty… but you don’t get to ignore it.
Care (this is where most people slip)
Light is everything with this one.
Bright, indirect, consistent.
Too dark and the variegation dulls. Too harsh and those pale sections burn fast.
Watering wants balance.
Not bone dry. Not soaked.
Just that middle ground most people miss.
And the soil…
If it stays wet, it’s game over eventually.
Keep it chunky. Keep it airy. Let the roots breathe.
The honest bit
This isn’t rare because it’s impossible.
It’s rare because most people don’t keep it looking good.
You’ll see loads of average ones out there…
Faded variegation
Weak leaves
Struggling growth
Then you see a good one…
And it stops you.
That’s the difference care makes with this plant.
Who this is for
If you like the look of a Polly but want something with a bit more personality… this is it.
If you’ve already got a few plants under your belt and you’re ready for something that reacts to how you treat it…
Even better.
This is one of those plants that reflects your skill back at you.
Alocasia Polly Variegata is a rare variegated form of Alocasia x amazonica, known for its dramatic arrow-shaped leaves with white, cream, or yellow variegation. This compact tropical houseplant thrives in bright indirect light, well-draining soil, and moderate to high humidity, making it ideal for indoor plant collectors.
Alocasia 'Polly Variegata' - 7cm-10-12cm
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Philodendrons:
- Potting Soil (30%)
- Orchid Bark (30%)
- Perlite (30%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
