Anthurium Ace of Spades x Papillilaminum
This one doesn’t shout.
It just… absorbs the room.
The first thing you notice is the depth. Not colour… depth.
Leaves so dark they look like they’ve been polished. Velvet that doesn’t reflect light so much as swallow it.
Then the shape kicks in.
Longer than a standard Ace of Spades.
Cleaner than a pure papillilaminum.
Somewhere in between… and better for it.
It’s not flashy.
It’s controlled. Refined. Slightly intimidating.
This is one of those plants where you don’t need ten leaves.
One good one is enough.
Why this one is different
You’re crossing two heavy hitters here.
Ace of Spades brings that deep, near-black velvet and thickness.
Papillilaminum brings elegance… longer form, smoother transitions, a bit more grace.
What you get is balance.
Dark but not flat.
Structured but not rigid.
Velvet but with movement.
And when it’s grown well…
it doesn’t look like a hybrid.
It looks like something that should’ve always existed.
What’s actually going on
This is a high-end Anthurium hybrid built from two Central American velvet-leaf species lines.
Ace of Spades is already known for its “black velvet” look.
Papillilaminum adds that elongated shape and cleaner finish.
The result?
Deep, brooding foliage with refined structure and a subtle sheen depending on light conditions.
Which also means…
Slow to moderate growth
High demand for stability
Very quick to show when something’s off
This isn’t a forgiving plant.
But it is a rewarding one.
Care (this is where you either level up… or don’t)
Light needs to be bright, indirect, and consistent.
Too low and it sulks.
Too harsh and you’ll damage that velvet finish.
Watering is about rhythm, not routine.
Lightly moist… never wet.
Let it breathe between waterings.
Humidity is where this plant really shows its class.
You can grow it in normal house conditions…
but if you give it proper humidity, it transforms.
Leaves get bigger.
Texture gets deeper.
Everything sharpens up.
And soil…
If you’re not running a proper chunky aroid mix at this level, you’re guessing.
The honest bit
This isn’t a fast plant.
It doesn’t throw out leaf after leaf to impress you.
It takes its time…
and when a new leaf does come in, it lands.
Bigger. Darker. Cleaner.
You don’t rush this one.
You build it.
Who this is for
Not a beginner.
Not a casual buyer.
This is for someone who already gets velvet-leaf Anthuriums…
and wants something a step above the usual crystallinum crowd.
This is collector territory.
Quietly expensive taste.)
Anthurium Ace of Spades x Papillilaminum is a rare hybrid velvet-leaf Anthurium combining the dark, near-black foliage of Ace of Spades with the elongated structure of Anthurium papillilaminum. This collector houseplant thrives in bright indirect light, high humidity, and well-draining aroid soil.
Anthurium Ace of Spades x Papillilaminum - 7cm/10-15cm
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Anthurium:
- leca (15%)
- Orchid Bark (20%)
- Perlite (25%)
- Horticultural grit (20%)
- Worm Castings (15%)
- Compost (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
