Dracaena surculosa ‘Milky Way’
The Polka Dot Plant That Grew Up
If the night sky could photosynthesise, it’d probably look something like this.
Dracaena surculosa ‘Milky Way’ is a beautifully unusual species from the tropical forests of West and Central Africa, prized for its narrow green leaves generously dusted with creamy white speckles. The markings are so dense they resemble a galaxy of stars, giving this cultivar its perfectly chosen name.
Unlike the tall, cane-forming dracaenas you might be used to, this species grows as a naturally bushy, branching shrub, producing fresh stems from the base to create a lush, full display. It’s elegant, easy-going and just quirky enough to make people stop and ask what it is.
It’s one of those plants that quietly steals the show without demanding constant attention.
Plant Stats:
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, although it’ll happily tolerate slightly lower light levels.
Water: Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering again.
Humidity: Appreciates average to higher humidity but adapts well to most homes.
Soil: A free-draining houseplant mix with good aeration.
Why It’s Worth a Spot in Your Jungle:
Beautiful cream-speckled foliage that resembles a star-filled night sky.
Naturally bushy growth that fills out beautifully over time.
Easy-going and far less demanding than many collector’s plants.
An unusual species that’s perfect for adding texture and contrast to any plant collection.
Limited availability. Whether you’re just starting your jungle or have long since run out of windowsills, Milky Wayproves that sometimes the quietest plants leave the biggest impression.
Dracaena surculosa ‘Milky Way’ - 12cm/20-30cm tall
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Philodendrons:
- Potting Soil (30%)
- Orchid Bark (30%)
- Perlite (30%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
