Hoya ‘Mathilde Splash’ is small leaf perfection with attitude.
A hybrid of Hoya carnosa and Hoya serpens, ‘Mathilde’ carries compact, round foliage that sits somewhere between coin shaped and slightly hearted. Add the splash form, and those tidy green leaves are dusted with silver flecking that catches the light like fine metal shavings.
It trails. It thickens. It quietly becomes addictive.
Collectors love Hoya ‘Mathilde Splash’ because:
• The leaves stay compact and symmetrical
• Silver splash intensity varies leaf to leaf
• It flowers reliably when mature
• It performs well in normal indoor UK conditions
The splash is not painted on. It appears as irregular silver mottling across the leaf surface, sometimes subtle, sometimes generously freckled. Strong light enhances it. Each vine becomes a string of green coins dusted in silver.
This is not a sprawling jungle Hoya. It stays neat, making it ideal for shelves, hanging pots or small spaces where you still want character.
Light should be bright and indirect. The brighter the filtered light, the stronger the silver splash expression. Too little light results in slower growth and reduced flecking.
Water thoroughly when the soil has mostly dried. Hoya prefer to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is the fastest way to stall them. A free draining mix with bark, perlite and a light organic base works well.
Humidity helps but is not essential. It tolerates average indoor conditions as long as temperatures remain steady.
Growth rate is moderate. Once established, it will push steady new vines. When mature and slightly root bound, expect clusters of star shaped, fragrant flowers.
Hoya 'Mathilde Splash' - 6cm/13cm
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Hoya:
- Potting Soil (30%)
- Orchid Bark (30%)
- Perlite (30%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
