Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’
At first, it doesn’t look like much.
Long, narrow leaves… slightly odd for a Monstera. Almost like it hasn’t decided what it wants to be yet.
Then it matures.
And everything changes.
The leaves start splitting… deeper… narrower… more aggressive… until they look like they’ve been pulled apart from the centre outwards.
Like flames.
Not holes like a deliciosa.
Not neat cuts like an adansonii.
This is something else entirely.
Why this one hits
There are a lot of “rare” Monsteras.
Most of them look like slightly tweaked versions of the same thing.
This doesn’t.
The moment it matures, it becomes instantly recognisable.
Those deep, flame-like fenestrations aren’t subtle… they define the whole plant.
It looks wild.
Uncontrolled.
Like it shouldn’t exist indoors… but does.
What you’re actually dealing with
This plant was originally found in the collection of Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx… and here’s the interesting part:
No one actually knows what it is.
Not properly.
It could be a species.
A hybrid.
A mutation.
No one recorded it at the time… so it’s just been circulating ever since, quietly becoming one of the most sought-after Monsteras in the hobby.
And because of that…
It carries a bit of mystery with it.
Care (don’t overthink it… but don’t treat it like a pothos either)
This is still a Monstera at its core.
So the rules are familiar… just slightly less forgiving.
Light needs to be bright and consistent.
The better the light… the better the splits.
Poor light = long, plain leaves that never develop properly.
Watering wants rhythm.
Let the top portion dry out, then water properly.
It’s slightly more drought tolerant than softer Monsteras because of those thicker leaves.
And give it something to climb.
This is not a trailing plant.
It wants to go up… and it looks better when it does.
The honest bit
This is not an instant gratification plant.
Juvenile leaves look… fine.
But you’re not buying it for what it is now.
You’re buying it for what it becomes.
And when it gets there…
It’s one of the most distinctive Monsteras you can own.
Who this is for
If you want something that looks like every other Monstera…
This isn’t it.
If you want something that evolves… changes… and eventually looks like it belongs in a rainforest documentary…
This is exactly that.
