Philodendron burle-marxii ‘White Lava’

At first glance… it looks clean.

Long, narrow leaves. Slightly glossy. Easy shape.

Then the variegation hits.

Not soft. Not blended.

It comes through in sharp white and cream streaks, sometimes cutting hard across the leaf, sometimes running through it like cracks in stone.

It doesn’t look delicate.

It looks fractured.

That’s where the “White Lava” name makes sense…

Like something that’s cooled mid-flow and just locked into place.

Why this one hits

There are a lot of variegated philodendrons now.

Most of them lean soft. Marbled. Blended.

This doesn’t.

This is contrast-driven.

  • Dark green base

  • Bright white disruption

  • Clean, elongated leaf shape

It feels graphic. Almost designed.

And because of the burle-marxii structure…

It grows fast enough to actually build something with.

What you’re actually dealing with

This is a variegated form of Philodendron burle-marxii, a climbing aroid native to South America.

Which means:

  • It wants to climb

  • It grows relatively quickly in good conditions

  • Leaves can reach decent size as it matures

The “White Lava” mutation pushes strong white variegation across those elongated leaves, with each one developing its own pattern.

No two leaves match.

That’s the hook.

Care (this is where people either get a weapon… or a disappointment)

Light is everything here.

Bright, indirect, consistent.

Better light = stronger variegation

Poor light = green leaves and lost potential

Watering is straightforward:

Let the top layer dry out… then water properly.

And give it something to climb.

This is where most people miss it.

Let it trail… it looks average.

Let it climb… it sharpens up and starts producing better leaves.

The honest bit

This is one of those plants where quality varies massively.

Some are weak.

Some are barely variegated.

And then some…

Look insane.

So this is less about the name… and more about the individual plant you’re selling.

Who this is for

If you like:

  • Burle Marx

  • Fast-growing aroids

  • Clean but striking variegation

This sits right in that lane.

It’s a collector plant that still grows like a usable plant, which is a rare combo.

Philodendron burle-marxii White Lava is a rare variegated climbing houseplant with elongated leaves featuring bold white and cream variegation. It thrives in bright indirect light with well-draining soil and climbing support, making it ideal for collectors.
