Costus arabicus ‘Variegatus’
The Spiral Ginger That Looks Too Good to Be Real
Some plants impress with flowers.
Costus arabicus ‘Variegatus’ doesn’t wait that long.
Native to the tropical forests of South America, this stunning variegated form is all about the foliage. Every broad leaf is streaked with creamy white, soft yellow and fresh green, arranged along beautifully spiralling stems that give the entire plant an architectural feel. It’s bold, tropical and impossible to ignore.
As it matures, it forms elegant clumps of lush, striped foliage before producing bright red cone-like bracts, followed by delicate white flowers. It’s one of those rare plants that manages to steal the show even when it’s not in bloom.
If you’re trying to create a home that feels more rainforest than living room, this is a pretty good place to start.
