Adenia perrieri
Madagascar’s Living Sculpture
Some plants impress with flowers.
Some with colour.
Adenia perrieri simply exists… and somehow steals the entire show.
Native to the dry forests of Madagascar, this extraordinary caudiciform has evolved to survive some seriously unforgiving conditions. Its swollen, woody trunk acts as a natural water reservoir, storing precious moisture through long periods of drought before rewarding you with a burst of delicate climbing vines when the growing season arrives. It looks less like a houseplant and more like something an artist carved from driftwood before it decided to grow leaves.
Every plant develops its own character over time. The caudex becomes increasingly gnarled, textured and sculptural with age, making older specimens highly sought after by collectors. No two are ever identical, and that’s part of the magic. It’s a plant measured in years rather than weeks, becoming more beautiful with every season that passes.
Despite its exotic appearance, Adenia perrieri isn’t demanding. Give it plenty of bright light, a free-draining gritty compost and resist the temptation to water too often. During active growth it’ll happily produce fresh vines and lush green foliage, while in dormancy it may shed its leaves entirely as it rests, perfectly normal behaviour for a species adapted to Madagascar’s dramatic wet and dry seasons.
This is a plant that rewards patience.
Not with flashy flowers or explosive growth, but with something far rarer.
Character.
Every wrinkle in its trunk tells the story of survival, making Adenia perrieri feel less like a houseplant and more like a tiny ancient tree that’s quietly witnessed centuries pass by.

The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Alocasia:
- Potting Soil (50%)
- Orchid Bark (10%)
- Perlite (30%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
