Anthurium regale
Some plants grow. This one declares dominance.
Anthurium regale is the kind of foliage that stops people mid-sentence. Massive, velvety leaves stretch out like dark green shields, laced with thick, pale veins that look almost hand-painted. It doesn’t just sit in a room… it alters it. Suddenly everything else feels like background noise.
Native to the cloud forests of Peru, this is a plant that evolved in filtered light, high humidity, and constant airflow. Think mist rolling through trees, roots gripping bark, leaves catching broken light through a dense canopy. Bring one into your space and you’re essentially recreating a slice of that wild, slightly untamed world.
What makes regale special, beyond the obvious size and texture, is the way it matures. Each new leaf arrives bigger, bolder, more structured than the last. The veins thicken, the contrast sharpens, and before you know it you’ve got something that looks less like a houseplant and more like a botanical artefact.
There’s also a quiet flex to owning one. It’s not rare in the sense of unobtainable anymore, but growing a good one… that’s where the game is. Get it right and it rewards you heavily. Get it wrong and it will absolutely let you know.
Care isn’t complicated, but it is specific. Bright, indirect light is your sweet spot. Too dark and it slows right down. Too much direct sun and those velvet leaves will scorch faster than you can apologise.
The roots are where most people go wrong. Anthurium regale wants air. Proper air. A chunky, breathable mix is essential… bark, perlite, sphagnum, something that drains well and never sits heavy. If your soil looks like mud, you’re already in trouble.
Water when the mix starts to dry, not when it’s bone dry and not when it’s constantly wet. It’s a balance. Learn the weight of the pot, and you’ll be ahead of most.
Humidity is the real unlock. Average room conditions will keep it alive. Higher humidity will make it thrive… larger leaves, deeper colour, stronger structure. This is where it goes from “nice plant” to “what on earth is that?”
It’s bold. It’s unapologetic. And when it’s happy, it’s one of the most impressive plants you can own.
Anthurium regale. Not here to blend in.
Anthurium regale - 12cm /35cm
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Anthurium:
- Potting Soil (30%)
- Orchid Bark (30%)
- Perlite (20%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (15%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.

Reviews
Delighted with Regale. A bit bigger than expected, 50cm tall with another stalk coming. Excited to see how she develops.
