Philodendron squamiferum ‘Red’ — The Jungle Aristocrat
The first time you see Philodendron squamiferum ‘Red’, you might think it’s dressed for battle. Those crimson, hairy petioles — thick, bristled, almost animal — look more creature than plant. In its native range across Central and South America, those fine red hairs act as a defence, deterring insects and helping it trap moisture as it climbs skyward through the rainforest canopy.
Each leaf is deeply lobed, shaped like a medieval crest, a symbol of quiet power. As it matures, the red stems deepen to burgundy, contrasting beautifully with the satin green of its foliage. In bright, dappled light it glows — the colour seems to pulse faintly, as though warm blood moves just beneath the surface.
Caring for it means understanding rhythm. It doesn’t want to sit still. It’s a climber, a wanderer, a slow-motion conqueror. Give it a moss pole and it will ascend with purpose, each leaf growing larger, each lobe more defined. Keep it humid and consistently moist, but never soggy — it likes air at its roots and patience in its keeper.
This plant is confidence incarnate. Not loud, not needy — just regal. It stands tall without ever needing to prove itself. When placed among softer foliage, squamiferum ‘Red’ commands the scene, adding an edge of wildness to any collection.
You don’t buy this plant for cuteness. You buy it for presence — for that primal satisfaction of knowing your jungle has hierarchy again.
Philodendron squamicaule 'Red' - 6 cm/15cm
The following aroid mix I would like to share with you is working well for my Philodendrons:
- Potting Soil (30%)
- Orchid Bark (30%)
- Perlite (30%)
- Charcoal (5%)
- Worm Castings (5%)
Water thoroughly when watering to mimic tropical jungle conditions. It is best practice to keep the soil humid but never soggy.
