Peperomia prostrata, commonly known as String of Turtles, is detail at miniature scale.

This is a compact trailing houseplant with small, round leaves patterned in intricate shades of green that resemble tiny turtle shells. The surface is lightly textured, the markings geometric and precise, each leaf attached along fine trailing stems that gradually spill over the edge of a pot.

It is not dramatic in size. It is compelling up close.

Collectors favour Peperomia prostrata because:

• The leaf patterning is unusually detailed

• It stays compact and manageable

• It thrives in smaller indoor spaces

• It is ideal for shelves, terrariums and hanging displays

Unlike fast, sprawling vines, String of Turtles grows steadily and densely when happy. The stems lengthen, branching naturally, forming a layered curtain of patterned foliage.

Light should be bright and indirect. Too little light results in stretched stems and faded markings. Strong filtered light keeps the pattern crisp and the growth compact. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Water sparingly but thoroughly. Allow the top portion of the soil to dry before watering again. Peperomia prostrata stores some moisture in its leaves, making it more tolerant of short dry periods than constant dampness.

Use a well draining mix with added perlite to prevent compaction. Good airflow around the roots is essential. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.

Humidity is appreciated but not critical. It adapts well to typical UK indoor conditions as long as it is kept warm and out of cold draughts.

Growth rate is moderate. With stable care, it becomes fuller rather than longer too quickly, building density before length.
