Anthurium crystallinum - 6cm pot / 13cm
This is how the velvet Anthurium obsession starts. One heart-shaped leaf. A few luminous veins. Suddenly you've got a humidity meter and opinions about bark.
Anthurium crystallinum earns every bit of that attention. Its deep green foliage has a velvety finish crossed by pale, striking veins, giving each leaf the look of a carefully drawn botanical illustration. Except this one grows, changes and occasionally persuades you to move furniture.
Native to Panama and Colombia, this tropical Anthurium can grow on trees in its natural habitat. That helps explain why an airy root environment suits it so well. The exciting bit at home is the transformation: young leaves expand, deepen in colour and develop that wonderfully rich contrast as they harden off.
I love starting with a young crystallinum because you get to witness the whole performance. Each stronger, bigger leaf feels like a small personal victory. Give it warmth, filtered light and consistent moisture with good drainage, and enjoy becoming far too invested in a leaf.
Your future velvet jungle starts somewhere. This is a bloody lovely place.
