Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' - 8cm pot / 12cm

A fern with the confidence to interrupt an entire shelf of aroids. Asplenium nidus 'Variegata' brings that glorious bird's nest shape with extra colour running through the fronds. It's a proper little jungle crown.

I love the movement here. The leaves rise from the centre and fan outwards, so the plant looks alive from every angle. Variegation adds another layer to that shape, breaking up the green and making you notice the individual fronds.

Bird's nest ferns grow on trees in humid tropical forests, including in Southeast Asia. Here's the brilliant bit: the nest-shaped rosette catches falling leaves, which break down and help feed the fern. It effectively builds its own little compost collection up in the canopy. Considerably more organised than me.

At home, this variegated bird's nest fern gives you that lush forest feeling without needing a room full of enormous leaves. Keep it warm, gently lit and comfortably moist, watering around the roots rather than filling the centre.

If your collection needs something with a bit of wild, unfurling elegance, let this fern move in.
