Calathea 'Golden Veins' - 6cm pot / 12cm

Calathea 'Golden Veins' looks like it's had its foliage embroidered. Fine pale-gold lines run across the leaves, with green patterning underneath that makes the whole thing feel ridiculously intricate.

This is a prayer plant for people who appreciate the small details. Put it somewhere you pass regularly and you start noticing the rhythm of the foliage: leaves held out to catch the light, then changing position as the day moves on. Prayer plants have specialised joints at the base of their leaf blades that allow that movement. A houseplant with a daily routine. Fair enough.

Its family, Marantaceae, is famous for the patterned foliage of tropical forest plants, particularly from the Americas. That sheltered, humid world is the feeling I'd bring into its corner of your home: soft light, warmth and a little company from other leafy things.

The appeal here is the combination of delicate drawing and living movement. You aren't just buying something pretty for a shelf. You're adopting a tiny daily performance.

And yes, you will find yourself checking what position the leaves are in. Welcome to the club.
