Philodendron burle-marxii 'Variegata' - 6cm pot / 12cm
Philodendron burle-marxii 'Variegata' is gloriously untidy with a paintbrush. Cream and green tumble across elongated leaves, sometimes in little patches, sometimes with a proper sweeping flourish. It makes restraint look terribly dull.
The species comes from tropical South America, including Brazil, and carries the name of Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx. It's a fitting association for foliage that looks so good arranged with other plants: long leaves crossing, contrasting patterns, green sitting against cream.
I love the way this variegated Philodendron fills out. You get a collection of individual leaf patterns held together by that flowing shape, so there's plenty to enjoy both up close and across the room. Every new leaf gives the display a slight reshuffle.
Let it grow in a warm, bright spot with filtered light and an airy root mix. Offer support as its stems develop, then enjoy the layers of foliage building around it.
If you're after a plant that looks wonderfully generous rather than primly arranged, this is a lovely one to adopt. A little living chaos for the jungle.
