Tillandsia air plants make me look at a piece of wood and think, 'That could have a plant on it.' This is a perfectly healthy way to look at the world. Probably.
A spray of leaves, an unusual outline and the freedom to display it without soil make this a lovely little addition to an indoor jungle. Many air plants naturally perch on trees in the Americas, using the branch as a support while their leaves take in water and nutrients. Their roots are mainly there to help hold on. Clever little things.
The really addictive part is the variety. Some shapes are neat and starry, others more curling and creature-like. This listing is for one Tillandsia from a mixed selection, so the precise species and silhouette will be a surprise rather than a named variety.
I'd give it an open display with bright, gentle light, somewhere you can pick it up easily for watering and let it dry properly afterwards. No soil required, but it still appreciates a drink.
If you've been saying you haven't got space for another plant, I may have just found your loophole.
- Light: Bright, diffused light and good airflow.
- Water: Wet the plant thoroughly using rainwater or suitable low-mineral water. Shake off excess and let it dry completely before watering again. Adjust frequency to warmth, humidity and the individual plant.
- Display: Grow without soil, on an open support where water can drain. Avoid sealed glass containers and water trapped in the crown.
- My tip: Air plants still need water. The name has caused enough misunderstandings already.
