Tillandsia usneoides - Spanish Moss - 60–70cm
Spanish moss is a jungle beard, and I feel exceptionally well placed to recommend one. Soft, silvery strands spilling down from a branch, moving with the air and making an ordinary plant corner feel like somewhere you'd hear tropical birds.
Tillandsia usneoides has a wonderfully misleading common name. It comes from the Americas, and it's a flowering bromeliad rather than a true moss. That puts it in the pineapple family. Yes, your hanging jungle beard has a pineapple relative. Plants are brilliant.
In nature it drapes over branches, using them for support while tiny scales on its leaves absorb water and nutrients. At home, the appeal is that flowing, cloud-like texture. I love it around an open plant display, softening the edges and adding a different kind of movement among the broad leaves.
This shorter hanging selection is lovely for starting that layered canopy feeling. Give the strands bright filtered light, regular water and enough airflow to dry comfortably.
One hanging portion to adopt. Let the jungle grow a beard of its own.
