Anthurium veitchii
The King of the Jungle
Some plants earn nicknames.
This one earns a title.
Anthurium veitchii, better known as the King Anthurium, is one of the most majestic foliage plants in the world. Its long, dramatically rippled leaves can eventually stretch well over a metre in length, cascading down like emerald waterfalls. Every corrugation catches the light differently, giving the foliage incredible texture and making it look as though it has been sculpted rather than grown.
Native to the cloud forests of Colombia, this remarkable species spends its life perched high in the trees as an epiphyte, where cool air, frequent mist and filtered sunlight create the perfect jungle sanctuary. Rather than growing in soil, its roots cling to branches, happily soaking up moisture from the humid air and the occasional tropical downpour.
One of the joys of owning a King Anthurium is watching it grow into its crown. Young plants are handsome enough, but maturity is where the magic happens. Each new leaf emerges larger, longer and more dramatically pleated than the last, transforming what starts as a beautiful houseplant into a true centrepiece that demands attention without ever asking for it.
Despite its regal reputation, it isn’t nearly as intimidating as it looks. Give it bright, indirect light, an airy aroid mix, regular watering once the mix begins to dry and plenty of humidity if possible. Good airflow and warm temperatures will reward you with steady growth and increasingly spectacular foliage.
Some plants are happy being part of a collection.
Anthurium veitchii has other ideas.
It doesn’t blend in.
It rules the room.
