Philodendron melanochrysum - 12cm pot / 40–50cm

Philodendron melanochrysum is what velvet wishes it looked like. Long, dark leaves, pale golden veins and a surface that catches the light in the most unfairly beautiful way. You can understand why it's known as the black-gold Philodendron.

This climbing species comes from Colombia. In a collection, its great trick is the change from younger foliage to the long, sumptuous leaves of a well-grown mature plant. Each fresh leaf gradually expands and deepens in colour, giving you a slow reveal that is dangerously easy to become obsessed with.

I love how the veins hold their brightness against the darker blade. Put it beside glossy green foliage and you get a completely different texture, something that makes the whole corner feel richer and more layered.

Support is part of the dream here. Give your melanochrysum something to climb, warmth, filtered light and comfortable humidity, and let it work towards that mature silhouette. Those long leaves need patience as they unfold. Fingers off. I know it's tempting.

Adopt this if you want to grow a plant that makes you put your tea down and properly look.
