Oh, come on. Velvet AND variegation? Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek Variegata' was clearly never interested in playing fair.
Those arrow-shaped leaves have a deep green, velvety surface, sharp pale veins and unpredictable splashes of cream and white. The contrast is outrageous. A new leaf starts to unfold and suddenly you're checking on it more often than your phone. I understand completely.
Its species comes from the Philippines, where it grows in damp, shaded forest. This variegated form takes that already beautiful green velvet foliage and adds a different paint job to every leaf. The green areas contain the chlorophyll that powers growth, which makes a good balance of green and pale markings worth appreciating as much as a dramatic white splash.
For me, a variegated Frydek belongs where the light catches that velvet and you can watch each leaf mature. Give it warmth, bright filtered light and steady care, and let it get on with being disgustingly good-looking.
